I'm the office administrator for a 28-person parts company. I manage roughly $120,000 in annual purchasing across 8 vendors, and I report to both operations and finance. I'm not the person who runs the laser. I'm the one who has to approve the PO, check the spec sheet, and explain why we spent money on a Trotec laser when we could have outsourced.
If you're in a similar position, this is for you. We bought a Trotec Speedy 100 in 2024 after a painful evaluation process, and I've since reviewed quotes for another laser line. This checklist is the practical version of what I wish I had been given before I started.
I'm going to keep it in six steps. No theory. Just the things that made the difference between a smooth purchase and a budget-review headache.
Step 1: Define the Jobs, Not the Machine
Do not start with "I want a Trotec laser." Start with what you actually need to cut, engrave, or mark. The answer changes the machine.
For us, Trotec came up because the production team wanted a Trotec laser cutting machine for acrylic, wood, and foam samples. We also needed metal marking for serial plates. Those are different technologies. CO2 lasers handle organics well. Fiber lasers handle metals well. Trotec makes both, but not one machine does both at the same level.
So the first step is to write a one-page job list. Include materials, sizes, expected batch quantity, and targeted edge quality. If a supplier tells you one machine can do all of it without testing, that's a warning sign.
Step 2: Get a Price That Makes Sense, Not Just a Number
The Trotec laser Speedy 100 price is a common search term, and the reason is simple: Trotec doesn't list one clean price. It is quote-based, and the answer depends on power, table size, exhaust options, software, and accessories.

What does this mean for you? Get your quote after you know the job list from Step 1. Then compare not just the machine price, but the total configuration. A bare machine quote from one dealer and a turnkey quote from another is not a fair comparison.
Step 3: Ask for a Fiber Laser Diagram and Understand It
This next tip sounds technical, but it saved us from buying the wrong platform.
When you evaluate a fiber laser for marking, ask for a labeled fiber laser diagram. The diagram should show the pump source, the gain fiber, the beam delivery, the scan head, and the controller. If a salesperson cannot explain where the beam comes from and what gets serviced, the after-sales process will be painful.
For a CO2 laser like the Speedy 100, the diagram looks different: mirrors, lenses, and a gas laser tube instead of a fiber-optic cable. It matters because maintenance costs are different. I am not saying one is better. I am saying you need to know which one they quoted, because the operational cost model changes.
Short version: fiber laser diagram = find the service points. That's it.
Step 4: Test Your Exact Material—Especially Polyurethane Foam
This is the step I almost skipped. I knew we should test the actual material. I thought, "it's just cutting foam, what could go wrong?" The odds caught up with me during a preliminary material test: our polyurethane foam didn't cut as cleanly as the acrylic sample the dealer showed us.
Here's the thing: laser cut polyurethane foam is not a one-size-fits-all process. Density, cell structure, and additives change the result. The edge can be smooth or charred, and some foam can release unpleasant fumes. With the right speed, power, and frequency settings on the Trotec, the edge quality improved dramatically. Without the test, we would have signed the PO and then blamed the machine for something that was really a material-parameter problem.
Before you buy, send samples of your actual material to Trotec or your dealer. Ask for a cut-and-return test with your exact material, not a similar one. Check the edge finish, smoke production, and dimensional accuracy. This is also the time to ask about the ventilation setup.
Step 5: Check Cost Per Part and Payback, Not the Sticker Price
When I compared our outsourced cutting invoices with the projected in-house cost, the payback made sense. But that was only because we had steady volume and a pain point: rush sample orders. If we were buying the laser for a hobby, it would not have made sense.
Here's a better way to think about it. Calculate the cost per part using the laser's speed, your labor time, the price of the Trotec laser, and the maintenance cost. Then compare that with what you pay an outside shop. Include the cost of a late sample—that alone justified our machine.
One more thing: quality. When I compare our Q1 and Q2 sample results side by side, the in-house parts look better. And those parts carry our company name. A burned edge on a foam prototype makes the whole company look sloppy. That's not a soft benefit. That's brand perception.
Step 6: Is Laser Engraving a Good Business? Maybe. Depends.
This is the question we asked ourselves before buying an additional machine. My honest answer: it's a good business if you already have customers. It's a risky business if you buy first and look for customers later.
Laser engraving machines can produce personalized products, signs, awards, and industrial markers. The margin on some engraved products can be strong. But as a procurement person, I see the costs other people forget: floor space, ventilation, maintenance, training, scrap, and the time it takes to job quote. Trotec laser machines are reliable, but "reliable" is not the same as "no attention needed."
If you're asking about laser engraving as a business, I'd say start with a sales channel. Then buy the machine to support it. If you buy the machine first, your marketing plan needs to be already running before the crate arrives.
Common Mistakes I've Seen (and One I Made)
- Skipping the material test. The "it's basically the same" assumption cost us two weeks and a process revision.
- Ignoring ventilation and fumes. A laser isn't just a desktop printer. Polyurethane foam in particular needs proper exhaust.
- Comparing incompatible quotes. Check the included software, chiller, and installation before saying one vendor is cheaper.
- Forgetting training time. The operator will not be making parts on day one. This is normal. It's also a cost.
There's something satisfying about a capital expense that clears finance on the first review. Ours did, because we had the job list, the material test, and a payback calculation that actually matched reality. The laser can wait. The wrong laser is a lot harder to return.
