The Request That Made Me Search for a Trotec Laser Logo
Last January, if someone had asked me “what is a galvo laser?”, I would have guessed it was a character in a Marvel movie. I would have been wrong—completely wrong.
I’m the office administrator for a 40-person product development firm. I manage purchasing for the model shop and facilities—roughly $1.1 million in annual spend across maybe 60 vendors. I report to both operations and finance. That sounds organized. It usually is. But when our design lead asked for a “wood engraving laser machine” in February 2025, I had no idea where to start.

The key is the beam delivery system. A galvo laser has a laser head that stays in one place. Two mirrors mounted on galvanometer motors steer the beam across the work area. “Galvo” is short for galvanometer. That’s the part that moves, not the whole head.
Put another way: a galvo laser is fast because the beam jumps quickly across a small field. That makes galvo systems a common choice for serial numbers, QR codes, logos, and metal marking.
The tradeoff is field size and cutting ability. Most galvo lasers have a fairly small marking field, so they’re not ideal for cutting large wood panels. For that, you usually want a gantry system, where the whole laser head moves over the workpiece on a frame. A Trotec Speedy 100 is a gantry CO2 laser. The SpeedMarker line uses galvo technology.
If someone asks “what is a galvo laser?” in an industrial buying conversation, the follow-up should be: “Is a galvo laser better than a gantry system for my parts?” The answer depends on part size, material, and production volume.

For flat wood panels and larger prototype sheets, a gantry CO2 laser is often the right choice because of the open bed and cutting capability. The Speedy is a CO2 gantry laser, and while Trotec’s team was honest about its strengths, our specialty steel nameplates still need a different approach. We’re using an outside marking service until the volume justifies adding a fiber/galvo system. The Lessons I’d Share With Another Buyer
The most frustrating part of this whole process wasn’t the machine or the price. It was the vocabulary. I could handle a budget. I couldn’t handle three overlapping product categories and no glossary.
So here are the lessons, partly so I don’t forget them myself:
- A galvo laser and a gantry laser are different tools. Before anyone asks “what is a galvo laser?”, the more practical question is “which type makes sense for my workpiece?”
